Pillars of our research

Our research is carried out with focus on the activities with a view to achieving practical outcomes. We are involved in national and transnational research projects and we are actively involving our students in research activities. The main pillars of our research include

  • Preparation of thin layers – diamond, boron doped diamond, DLC, graphite, metals…

  • Thin Film Analysis – Scanning Electron Microscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, Voltammetry…

  • Application – Sensors, Electronics, Wastewater Treatment…

Material science

Within our research, we are focuse on the preparation and study of mainly carbon thin layers such as diamond, boron doped diamond, DLC and graphite, but we are also working with the preparation of metal layers. We are able to increase the potential of prepared materials by subsequent modification such as structuring and termination. In particular, we use deposition methods

  • Chemical vapor deposition – diamond, boron doped diamond, carbon nanowalls

  • Sputtering – DLC, metals

  • Evaporation – Copper, gold, chromium, aluminum and other metals

Material analysis

Detailed analysis is a substantial part of research in the field of material development, and is essential for the proper optimization and evaluation of technological processes related to the preparation and modification of thin films. Within the diamond group we work mainly with the following analytical techniques

  • Scanning Electron Microscopy – JSM-7500F, resolution from 2 nm

  • Raman spectroscopy – chemical composition analysis

  • Potentiostat – electrochemical analysis of the layers

  • UV-Vis spectroscopy – analysis of liquid substances

Testing and applications

Due to its mechanical stability, chemical inertness and wide potential window, the boron doped diamond is a suitable material for various electrochemical applications. Within electrochemical applications, we apply boron doped diamond layers especially in the following areas

  • Electrochemical sensors – detection of heavy metals, pesticides, drugs …

  • Wastewater treatment – high efficiency of degradation of medicaments, resistant bacteria, drugs and pesticides
